Understanding ASD
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that typically becomes evident in childhood and affects individuals in three main areas: social interaction, communication (verbal and nonverbal), and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. The term “spectrum” reflects the significant diversity of how ASD can look, as each person with ASD has their own distinct pattern of strengths and challenges.
Early diagnosis is important. Early intervention can help a child with ASD make significant gains in language, social skills, and adaptive functioning. For older children, teens, and adults, appropriate support can meaningfully improve quality of life, relationships, and independence.
Individuals with ASD often experience co-existing conditions — including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and sensory sensitivities — that are important to identify and address as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
